The aims of the Yokoya Danjiri Preservation Society are to preserve the Yokoya Danjiri housed at Yokoya Hachiman Shrine in Uozaki-Kitamachi, Higashinada Ward, Kobe City and to pass on the intangible cultural asset of playing traditional percussion instruments to children in the community. Society activities include participation in the local danjiri festival held on March 4th and 5th. On the 5th, danjiris in our vicinity, including those from the Noyori and Okamoto areas, make a ceremonial entrance and gather at Moto-Sumiyoshi Shrine near JR Sumiyoshi Station. Our danjiri also appears on neighborhood streets on the 14th of September. On New Year's Eve, visitors to Yokoya Hachiman Shrine are treated to "amazake" sweet rice wine and "taruzake" rice wine from a wooden cask. We also hold percussion instrument classes for children offered free of charge once a month or so for the purpose of passing on traditional culture to the next generation. Additionally, in summer, we offer a program of radio calisthenics for children at the nearby Kawai Park every morning from July 21st to August 31st.
